Hi this is my first post.

Managing Tottenham Hotspur in FM2008 is driving me nuts,
I have wasted 100s of hours to always get sacked no matter what I do.

I`m obviously not understanding something here so any pointers would be very much appreciated.

I have tons of questions I `d like to ask but I`ll ask one or two at a time so as not to be too greedy.

Training:
I usually get a 5-7 star coach on each training attribute for the 1st team, although I tend to neglect the youth team as I am not allowed enough coaches to do it properly.
Hopefully this is acceptable?

Pre-season:
I train all my squad on

strength\Aerobic\ball control\tatics\set pieces
(high on str+aer medium on rest)

until they are just above the top line in the players training attributes chart or if the player complains & then I bung them on my own defined training for the rest of the season.

This works well for a few months and then all of a sudden bang! It all goes to pot as if the game sabotages them and most of my team are zapped to low training levels & I can never really get them going again for months. (this also happens using other peoples training schedules I have tried)

So, my questions are:

Am I training pre-season properly? If not could you advise me please?

Should I just ignore training once the season is underway?

I`m not sure which type of player need strength training more or aerobic less etc. please help.

When a player is playing badly I sometims give then a few days rest or bung them on general training, sometimes it works mostly not.
Should I tinker like this?

I`m not that good at this training lark & it appears that if you don`t get it right then you can`t do well in the game.
Most irritating and frustrating.

Rindhoops.

just to emphasize what Bole said, the pre-season training is not necessary! Just leave it in general, or put them straight into specific training regime.. and leave it as it is.. you don't need to change your players' training regime if they're injured or playing poorly. You may grant your players a week absent if he feels jaded (normally happens to youngsters when they have played too many games in a season under they belt). Other than that, you should not worry!

What i do for pre-season training is arrange 15+ friendlies, with 3 friendlies in a row and let my assistant play them.

He switches between 3 teams so your players wont get over worked but they do get their rythm back

rindhoops - remember, that if u give your team a hard time training,
they will be tired and exhausted after a few games in your new season.
light training, first friendly games with weak opponents,
then two or three with same strenght as your team, and one or two games
to finish your pre-season with strong opponents like Real Madrid,
Barcelona, Milan, Inter or Bayern.
I do this every pre-season, and rotate my squad very often,
and my players in Premiership (Man Utd) need 2-3 days to be 99% fit.
I also win tough games because my games have more fitness than other teams.
I sometimes in "opposition instructions" set my players to tackle hard
opposition players with lowest fitness, so sometimes it causes
injuries in opposition first squad
I know that it is not fair, but my board is only interested in winning
the title
I was sacked only once, in CM, and I don't want to be sacked again

Well guys I took all you advice.

Massive improvement to start of season but after just 5 matches
it all goes to pot, I think Bole`s training is too hard for most of my squad I tried tinkering with it to no avail. I wonder if the Spurs team just are not allowed to do well first season, but if you don`t make really good progress in the second season you are in big trouble with the board and if you have not won a cup or got in the top 3 you get sacked by third season, well, I do anyway. To be honest the board expectations are over the top. I have tried stating lower expectations at start of season but the team seem to play even worse than usual.

Thanks for all your advice everyone, I`ll keep trying but it`s so frustratingly hard to get anywhere with Spurs I am not enjoying it anymore, and that`s wht it`s supposed to be about isn`t it?

I have tried cheating but it seems pointless and unfulfilling.

Hopefully the update will help when it comes.

spurs is maybe one of the easiest teams, i mean to make them big.

all you need is to sell a few players, buy a few defenders, spurs already got some good players. but still it isnt that hard with spurs tbh.

and its not about the training i think.

i can upload my basic trainings, but that wont help much, plus u gotta rest your team once in a while.

and use proper tactics...

Yeah, I guess. After 5 games or so the whole squad go flat, getting only 5s and 6s in a match whereas before 6s-8s, this leads to terrible results and it doesn`t seem to matter what I do.

I agree, on paper they do look a good proposition and should do well.

I usually get in Ezequiel Garay, a really good defender,(if he is on 7.5m min rel) though he is only 22yo great player esp with set-pieces, and\or mattia Cassani wb\l\r he is great cover for bale\chimbo

If I can, I either get Ismeal Aissati or Jeremy Menez for left wing

I think you are right the training isn`t so important, maybe I`ll have to look closer at my tactics. Though I uesd to do fine in previous FMs.

Heres last night games that I played:

New game:
---------
Won 2-0 v Birmingham
drew 1-1 chelsea
drew 1-1 man utd
drew 3-3 bolton
won 1-0 liverpool
-------------------above are nice results for spurs-------
lost 2-1 blackburn
won 3-0 euro cup FC groningen
lost 4-0 west ham
lost 2-1 everton league cup

here on I just can`t stop the rot, bad result after bad result usually follows and I`m lucky to finish in top half of table.

as you said, training is not so important.about my trainings, well i think it is not so hard.i mean,i play with Barnet, with many weak players, and they are not tiring of the training.

red army is right, just buy some good players.do not buy young players, that is for teams in the second league,if you want to win league, you must have more experienced and players with good mental strength.

Listen you can not play every game great,of course there will be some bad results after series of good results.look at your tactics, when your team play bad, look at them,on their play, and see what is wrong, who is bad,and think what to change.
about FM07 tactics,well i also tried that,and it didn't work,cause this game still have bugs,especially in tactics.

and i noticed that team talks are VERY important,so choose wisely what are you going to say to them, and pre game talk is important.when i let my assistant to talk to them, they play bad,so when i do that, they are better.

i change my tactics(mostly orders, sometimes formation) about 3-4 times for a season.for example,my team starts to play bad in february, and then i change some things.of course you can not play every game with same tactic.
here are some examples:

Miroslavu ruka podrhtava dok mu zena mirno spava,oj tugo jesenja.

Thanks Bole the formations are useful, but as RedArmy says, I think the personal instructions are the key part to the tactic, esp if you don`t really understand (like me) the best way to play MC`s or fullback etc.
the default settings as usual seem to get you nowhere much.
I agree fully Bole that team-talks have a huge effect on results, prob too much considering the very limited options available.

As for your Arsenal formation, if I played my fullbacks against them like that that would slaughter me. Against Arse\Man U\Chels I always do 100% closing down, tight marking, slow play, short passing, counter attack, zonal marking, 4-5-1. In other words stop them playing and I usually get a draw or sneak a lucky win in the last 10 mins when they pour forward to go for the win. If I play any other way I usually get slaughtered :-)

A good point about young players there, Spurs have very young team, Gareth Bale is just 17yo yet he is down as Important First Team Player, but he is nowhere near good enough yet and costs many goals, though his free-kicks help keep that down. Problem is I will be sacked before the youngsters improve enough to win anything!

Can anyone suggest the best "personal settings" for full backs, MC and DMC and , well all of them please?
