What do the silver stars in the player ability bit mean?

Not sure if this has been asked before but when you look at a young player sometimes his ability is in a gold star, sometimes it is a silver one with no gold. Some of my players have about 7 of these silver (empty?) stars so what do they mean, anyone know?

i think it starts of as one silver star which means worst, nd goes up to seven silver stars, then to one gold star, nd best is seven gold stars. im guessin.
