if u are playign with the 4-3-2-1 formation then u have to have one good DM and he has to be set as a DM!
he is gonna be infront of the central defenders, his mentality should be set defensive. creative freedom should be normal and far away from much because he has to be back helping out.
forward runs rarely. run with ball rarely. through balls often.
simple as that. then u will see that ur opposition wont come through easily as they do.
and at times u have to play a bit narrow when ur defending. and ur fullbacks should close down in own area. why? because otherwise they will be closing down far to up the pitch and if someone gets past it will open up.

i've used some of your advice in my lsta agame against everton and won 3-1 and i've played with my 2nd team.i'll try the same tactic in the fa cup final against arsenal....hope my game will improve
