While the new features sound cool on paper, a closer look at the details shows that our initial doubts were right. This update is being rushed out in pieces, and the big FIFA license comes with some annoying fine print.
The May 26th Reality - Quick Starts and Simulated Seasons
We previously complained about the late-May release date, because the club season is already over by then. To fix this, SI is introducing a "Quick Start" option. When you boot up the update, you can jump straight into the FIFA World Cup action starting on May 11th in-game. This gives you just two friendly matches to choose your final team. A second start date will arrive in June, dropping you right at the start of the tournament with a pre-made 26-man squad.

If you want to manage both a club and a country at the same time, you still can. However, if you choose the new May or June start dates, the game will simply simulate your club's season in the background until that point.
On the bright side, SI confirmed you can add international management to your current FM26 saves, or bring over your national team saves from FM23 and FM24.
The FIFA License - The Missing Kits and Teams
SI talked a lot about their first-ever official FIFA partnership. They promised the real World Cup trophy, official logos, special match graphics, and the official Adidas match ball. It sounds great, but remember when we asked if we traded real gameplay for a shiny logo? The new blog post proved our point. SI added a small note admitting that not all official kits will be in the game at launch.
Because of slow legal approvals, several qualified countries will wear generic kits on May 26th. SI says they will add them "at a later date". Even worse, only 47 of the 48 qualified countries will be playable when the update drops.

Squad Overhauls - Provisional Lists & Player Drama
Managing your squad is getting a much-needed upgrade. SI is introducing a "Provisional Squad" system. This lets you pick a big pool of players before cutting it down to the final 26-man tournament squad. This system is now connected directly to the Squad Planner.
The National Shortlist also gets a new "Player Discovery" view. This shows you how players are performing for their clubs and crucially what they expect from you.
Players will now have clear attitudes. Some will expect to be the star player, while others will just be happy to travel. You will have new chat options to tell a player he is being dropped, which will definitely cause some classic FM locker room drama.
Tactics, Coaches, and Fitness
To help your players survive a hot summer tournament, SI tweaked the game's conditioning system. Players should now recover a bit better between intense international matches.National teams can also finally hire their own Set Piece Coaches and view specific international stats in the Data Hub.
Closing Thoughts
There is no doubt that seeing the real FIFA World Cup trophy lift and using the new squad planner features will be fun. Being able to manage women's national teams for the first time is also a positive step for the series. But these new details prove that SI is racing against the clock. Releasing a World Cup mode where you cannot even play as every qualified country, and where major teams have fake kits at launch, shows how rushed this Unity transition is.
SI wants us to get excited for the summer, but delivering an incomplete feature in June feels like too little, too late for a game that has been full of compromises.
