Why is my team suddenly rubbish?

Don't understand. First season in the championship with B'Ham City and it started off brilliantly - banging 3-4 past every team and sitting top of the table. Then, after 18 games or so, I'm suddenly getting thrashed by everybody. Before, my players looked amazing - the opposition couldn't get the ball and we sliced through defences like a hot knife through butter. Now.....we suddenly look slow and lacking ideas....every other team looks like Brazil and we look like the local pub team. What the hell?!?!
I can't see anything obvious wrong with my tactics or training. And my squad is miles better than anything else in the Division.....I have Andre Arshavin for goodness sake

Other teams in the league start to figure out your tactics halfway through the season. Try tweaking them or completely changing them.

completely changing them might not help. but tweaking them will certainly do so.
this can happen to anyone, and usually does.
and you have to also have a look at your teams morale as it has a big part on the game.
after a few bad games the players morale will lower and that could be the difference between you winning the league or getting relageted.
keeping them happy might be tough if your having a tough period, but try to encourage them and do other things to make their morale go up.
and to maintain consistency after 1-2 wins you have to take good time on your tactics and such.
at first you can just play the game without any tactical changes at all, and you might do great. but then you need to tweak the tactics as atlantic said haha.
you have to have a good look at the opposition and change ur tactics according to the team your against. picking the right players for that exact match and stuff like this.

Thanks guys - I'll try tweaking my tactics a bit. Couple of quick questions...
I've tried using Arshavin in a free role (AM) as his stats suggest he would be perfect for this - erxtremely high decisions and creativity. Yet, he always does rubbish at this and I have to revert back. Any tips - or should I just stick at it and give him time to adjust?
Also, I think my scout is pretty good, but whenever I get a report on the next opposition it's usually the same report 9 times out of 10......the pitch is on the short side, so-and-so likes his teams to get the ball down, we should watch the pace of their attackers, etc, etc. It hardly helps when it's the same for every team. Is this normal - or should I fire my scout?

thats quite so normal, but if u do have a great scout you might get a slightly more elaborate info than that. but usually its not much difference.
and about arshavin. when i had in my team long time ago, i used him as a winger. and at times AMC. even though a winger i used to give him the free role option.
but thats not exactly what makes a player good or bad.
if your playing 4-4-1-1, then i would suggest u give him slightly more creative freedom.
and usually the other options in personal instructions have much more affect on his performance.

you need to change things around a bit you can'tkeep the same tactic for the whole season, i recommend that you have two tactics such as 442/442 diamond. when one isn't working use the other

its not really about them working or not haha. well sorry for me it isnt hehe.
i usually have a 'home tactic'. which is attacking.
and i usually have normal tactic for away games.
and defensive tactics for away games if i really need to, like against big teams. i usually dont go that defensive though.
